Redefining Leadership by Leaning into Authenticity

Hi Reader,

In the tech industry, where change is constant, authentic leadership is critical.

But what happens when “being authentic” gets tangled up with societal expectations and unconscious biases?

It’s a common struggle for many of my coaching clients, and it’s a topic that we tackle head-on.

Many of us, as women in leadership, encounter a common pitfall: conforming to stereotypical gender roles. We sometimes feel pressured to be perceived as “nurturing” or “accommodating,” and this can, at times, force us to downplay our assertiveness or steer away from our natural leadership style.

Is this the real essence of authentic leadership?

Over-sharing personal information is another trap we might fall into in our quest for authenticity. We strive for openness and vulnerability, yet there’s a fine line between sharing our personal experiences and exposing ourselves to potential bias and judgment.

What about boundary-setting? Women leaders often find it difficult to establish clear boundaries between their personal and professional lives. We tend to prioritize availability and accessibility, at times leading to burnout or diminished effectiveness.

Finally, there’s the challenge of staying authentic in our leadership while facing stereotypes around caregiving responsibilities. A common issue many women encounter is this mistaken belief that prioritizing family life somehow detracts from our dedication to our careers. This unfounded notion can cause damaging repercussions such as being passed over for a business trip or a deserved promotion, due to the stereotype that women aren’t as committed or competent in their roles because of personal responsibilities. These biases undermine our authenticity and commitment as leaders, forcing us to continuously prove our dedication instead of authentically leading. Such challenges are harmful and perpetuate outdated stereotypes, creating an authenticity paradox that many women leaders grapple with.

The question we need to ask ourselves is, are we truly embodying authentic leadership if we let these misconceptions shape our behavior?

These are challenges that many of my clients grapple with. As a coach, I facilitate a space for dialogue, reflection, and transformation. Together, we strive to redefine what it means to be an authentic leader, without succumbing to societal pressures or biases.
