Permission Granted: The Leadership Power of Naps
Hi Reader,
I recently told a coaching client that I give her full permission to take a nap.
You might be wondering what napping has to do with leadership coaching. 😊
This client spent a few months working abroad in a different time zone, which shifted her work schedule. During that time, she had the opportunity to take a nap almost every afternoon—and didn’t feel guilty about it because her team wasn’t working due to the time difference.
Now that she’s back in the U.S., she mentioned how much she misses those naps. When I asked her why she couldn’t continue the habit, she said, “Well, now there are meetings in the middle of the afternoon, and I feel bad skipping one to take a nap.”
Her calendar was fully packed with meetings, leaving her feeling like there was no space for herself. But as we dug deeper, she realized that there were a few meetings she didn’t need to attend.
I then asked her to reflect: “Would you be a more effective leader if you allowed yourself to nap?” She thought about it and said, “Yes, I’m more productive in the late afternoon and early evening. A nap would help me stay focused and energized.”
So, I gave her full permission to take that nap.
Sometimes, we need someone to remind us that it’s okay to pursue what we desire, especially when our ingrained beliefs tell us otherwise.
What’s one thing you desire for yourself that you’ve been hesitant to do? If you need a permission slip, I’m happy to write one for you. 📝
Giving you permission to thrive,
Jossie
