Hi Reader, How often do you feel like the amazing work you do goes unrecognized? My clients commonly tell me, “Hey, I’m delivering on all of this stuff. Why am I not being recognized for my hard work?” A nagging voice in the back of their head makes them wonder “Am I not doing enough? Am I working on the wrong things? Does my boss think I’m doing a bad job?” Unfortunately, as you go up the career ladder, guess what, you’re going to be praised less for your hard work. I used to joke that as a VP, I’d only have people reach out to me if something didn’t go well or I did something wrong. Terrible joke, right? I wouldn’t laugh either. The reality is that it’s not about your performance. Your manager is just very busy. So instead of worrying, it’s the perfect opportunity to take initiative in a way that directly benefits you. You need to showcase the things you’re doing, not just the day to day things for your team. Those are important, but what are the strategic initiates you are working on that are moving the needle? How are you tracking and sharing these updates? Can you create a weekly report? See how your manager would like you to communicate this to her and make it accessible for her. The bonus? This is great for performance review time. You can go back and look at each weekly report to see your team wins, your wins. You can highlight these successes without wracking your brain for what happened when over the last 6 or 12 months. Easily worth the amount of time you’ll spend each week preparing the report. If you aren’t already doing this, the second half of the year is a great time to start to documenting with plenty of time before end of the year performance reviews. Cheering you on, Jossie P.S. Looking to make those weekly reports even more powerful? Add coaching to your tool belt this summer. Book a time to chat with me about On-the-Go Coaching to see if it’s a good fit for you.
