How to Keep It Together on Election Day

Hey Reader,

Election Day is here for those of us in the US, and to be effective leaders leaders, we need to stay grounded and steady when things around us feel chaotic. With so much going on—from hurricanes to global conflicts and today’s election itself—many leaders I’ve spoken to lately have shared one recurring question:

“How am I supposed to keep it all together when everything around me feels chaotic?”

It’s a valid question. Times like these demand that we not only take care of our own mental health but also guide our teams and communities through them. Here are a few ways to help yourself and others find a sense of stability, even on days like today:

🌟 Protect Your Mental Health First

Election Day can amplify stress, so remember to decide what you are and aren’t available for. It’s okay to protect your peace by limiting news, social media, or conversations that don’t serve you.

It’s ok to say that you don’t want to discuss a certain topic.

🌟 Model Calm and Respectful Dialogue

As leaders in the US, it’s crucial to prepare for workplace discussions around the election. Emotions can run high, and conversations can quickly become heated. Here’s how to navigate these moments:

  • Set the Tone: Lead by example and promote a culture of respect. Encourage your team to be mindful of how their words might impact others.
  • Establish Boundaries: It’s perfectly acceptable to ask that political discussions be kept out of the workplace, especially if they risk creating tension.
  • Foster Understanding: Remind everyone that it’s okay to have differing opinions and that mutual respect is key to maintaining a healthy work environment.

🌟 Take Care of Your Inner Self

On days when uncertainty feels overwhelming, grounding techniques can keep you anchored. Whether it’s deep breathing, a brief walk, or journaling, these moments of self-care give you the strength to support those around you. Even a 60 second break between meetings can make a big difference.

🌟 Lean on Your Support System

You don’t have to go through this alone. Connect with friends, family, or even your community. Sharing your feelings and listening to others can provide comfort and perspective.

Remember, it’s not about having it all together all the time. It’s about taking small steps to care for yourself and showing up as the leader and person you want to be, even when the world feels uncertain.

Take a moment to pause, breathe, and prioritize yourself today. You’re doing an incredible job.

With you every step,
