A reality check for self-care for preventing burnout
I need to tell you something.
If you’re still thinking about work at 10pm while laying in bed, you’re not resting.
Yeah, that’s hard to hear.
Burnout is real.
With the constant changes in the tech industry, the high pressure can negatively impact health, team performance, motivation, innovation.
The best skill you can leverage against burnout is resilience – the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. This is your best tool for preventing burnout.
It’s a key trait for successful leaders – one you can learn and practice yourself and one you can teach your team members.
Real Self Care is the Prescription for Preventing Burnout
How are you supposed to actually do that though? Self-care is great pace to start.
It feels like everyone is talking about self-care these days. It’s described as many things – a bubble bath, a coffee, dessert, whatever treat of your choosing.
But the truth is that self-care is making sure you take time to listen to what your body needs and doing what it needs.
So self-care is going to look different for different people, but we all need to take breaks.
- Take 5 minutes between meetings to stand up, look out the window and get some sunshine in your eyes.
- Walk around the office or at home – how you move your body throughout the day makes a difference.
Create Mental Separation between Work and Personal
Shut down when you’re finished with work, taking the time to be intentional and signal to yourself “Hey, I am done with work for right now” to reset and refresh for a productive next day.So often at the end of the day, we just get tired, go lie down and watch tv. I get it. We all have those days.
But watching tv is not a hobby.
It doesn’t build up our resilience and energy reserves, which is what you need to excel in your work.
And not resting, not replenishing, that cycle leads to burnout.
Do what lights you up. Let yourself relax into the fun and joy and take your mind away from work.
Because if you’re still thinking about work at 10pm while laying in bed, you’re not resting.
Where are you taking time for your hobbies before or after work and on the weekends?
Cheers,
