The missing piece when managing up

Hey Reader,

Something I see often when people are managing up is they’re afraid of providing feedback or directly asking their manager or skip level for what they see is missing.

They feel like they will come off as too aggressive and think “oh, my gosh, my boss will think I’m saying that they’re doing something wrong.”

So then requests get hedged as questions, instead of specific proposals or asks.

I support my clients in determining how to rephrase their requests in a way that is confident and does not assign blame, but says “hey, this is what I really need from the leadership team. This is why, and this is what it would help accomplish.”

Remember, your leadership team aren’t mind readers 🙂 By providing them with these insights, you are helping them do their job better too!

Maybe you have a few proposals or initiates you want them to look at.
Maybe your team could use additional direction after a priority shift.

You’re sharing the information so they can make a more informed decision.

This can really help you make a difference.

  • It gives you the opportunity to clearly identify the connection to any strategic initiatives or larger goals you are working towards and why you need the support from them.
  • It saves the leadership team time, which they may not have a lot of already.
  • It showcases your expertise, your ability to see the big picture, and builds trust in you.

Go crush it,
Jossie
