The Sunk Cost Fallacy

Hi Reader,

We often talk about sunk cost fallacy when reflecting on work projects — should I continue to do this task/project or attend this meeting because I’ve already invested time and money into it?

We ponder “Is it actually accomplishing the goal I want?”

But what about in your life holistically?
What commitments or events do you still attend or do out of a place of people pleasing and fear of upsetting others?
Do your commitments light you up?
Do you say “I should do this” or “I have to do this” instead of “I get to …”.

If you do, consider whether it’s a commitment or action that you could start saying no to! We get to design our lives — and it starts by saying no to the things that don’t light us up.

For me, I was recently reminded about how important being able to say “no” to something is to protect my wellbeing, especially when I need to be flexible. I visited family in Florida earlier this month, and I chose when to work and when not to work. And being able to decide to put off non-urgent tasks when plans with extended family changed really mattered. That space let me return to this work ready to make an impact and with fresh, creative ideas.

So take this as your sign – it’s time to stop waiting for retirement to find happiness. Whatever that happiness means to you.

Cheers,

Jossie
